My Story facilitated a photography workshop for 15 street youth who attend Outside In’s Urban Ed Alternative School in Portland, Oregon. Urban Ed serves homeless and low-income youth by helping them complete their education and obtain their GED. The youth who participated in this project were given an opportunity to define themselves and document their lives in photographs. The participant’s images were used to inspire creative writing assignments designed to improve the their literacy skills.
I\'m goofy, mature, happy, lovable, caring, and proud. I\'ve made mistakes. I come from a good family.
There are patterns everywhere.
I see the unseen.
I am proud. I have honor. I am brave. I am caring. I am articulate.
Sometimes it seems like time, people, and even my own personal beliefs are against me. Sometimes I wonder if it’s masochistic to make a choice for survival.
Pulling creativity from my emptiness, a flower blossoming at midnight. Thirst, hunger, not complacent with myself.
Survival is a daily thing.
Are you lonely, or is the world lonely around you? Are you spinning, or is the world spinning around you? Is the world blurred, or are you blurred to the world? Are you cold, or is the world cold around you? I am all of the above, as is the world.

I\'m proud of my work, and enjoy what people have to say about it.
Day by day. My mind goes places in this world that the world will never see. Keep going on. Never look back. Keep your mind on good things - love, family, friends.
You need shelter. You need food. You need water. You need faith.
Most people look at me as just a big girl when they meet me. As soon as they get to know me, they see the fun, lovable me. Then they look at my eyebrow. They ask what happened, so I finally tell them.
I wake from my slumber and dread the day that presents itself to me. Do I man-up and deal with it? I man-up and deal with it. The pain is strong sometimes, but I\'m not going to let the pain of survival keep me down. I have to survive.
